Eshaan Prasad Mathakari

About

I'm Eshaan Prasad Mathakari, an AI engineer and data scientist in New York City. By day I build agentic AI systems at EXL. The rest of the time I run a small AI lab out of my apartment, do research on how models make decisions, and work on projects that have no business plan at all.

I studied computer engineering at SRM and data science at the University of Arizona. Along the way I co-ran a sneaker marketplace, co-authored research on ant-colony intelligence and shrimp disease, and learned that careful experiments teach you the most.

Away from the keyboard I take photographs, cut short films from my own footage, and write about mental health for The Talk Therapy.

Day job

AI Engineer · EXL · since 2025

I design and ship agentic AI systems: several cooperating agents with a person approving the decisions that matter, grounded in deterministic rules, citations and audit trails for regulated industries like banking, compliance and legal. I also work on AI safety and evaluation, and I ship full stack: React and TypeScript front ends, Python and Node back ends, and AWS.

Built during my professional work. The names are project code names, and client details stay private. Several are prototypes or proofs of concept built on synthetic data. Earlier work included downtime-recovery automation, a teacher agent that grades free-text compliance assessments, and research on computer-use agents (open-sourced as Sholay).
